NEUROTIC LADYLAND - A Musical Melodrama
Singing sensation and genre-bender Christa Hughes (Machine Gun Fellatio, Circus Oz, La Soiree) brings her new hit cabaret extravaganza NEUROTIC LADYLAND to The Vanguard for it’s Sydney premiere following sell-out performances at The Famous Spiegeltent (Melbourne), His Majesty’s Theatre (Perth) and headlining The Lorne Performing Arts Festival.
"This is cabaret at its most prolific and profound, even if on the surface it all seems absurd".
Blurring the lines between madness and brilliance Neurotic Ladyland captures our fragility by evaluating it into a hyper-real, vaudeville, freak-show circus. Inspired and guided by Norma Desmond (Sunset Boulevard), Baby Jane Hudson (Whatever Happened To Baby Jane), Little Edie Beale (Grey Gardens) and some of Christa's own creations, this show is a celebration of mad and magnificent women. Darkly comic, this chaotic cabaret takes the audience on a roller-coaster ride punctuated with moments of beauty, perversity, vulnerability and absurdity. The unique Miss Hughes at her vocally stunning best.
Featuring musicians Michael Lira, Leonie Cohen and Jim Dunlop.
"She is exciting, exuberant, inventive and, best of all, she kind of gives vulgarity a good name"
"Hughes took one of the most eclectic audiences and placed them in the palm of her hand...vaudeville mode...guitar-wielding rock and roll...fabulously wicked...inordinately amusing...outrageous verbal audacity... A wonderful entertainment"
